My name is Chicken Will of Tiverton, Ontario and I have been raising poultry and farming since moving out to Tiverton in 2005 from Toronto. I have always used natural methods of farming and raising livestock. In 2008, I applied for and was granted Organic Certification by OCPP/PRO-CERT. I raise small quantities of Poultry each year. I begin raising Poultry when the weather allows, this is usually mid-April. I finish the year with Christmas Turkeys in December.
I also raise laying hens that I keep all year round, they are comfortably housed indoors during the winter. I have not applied for Organic Certification for my layers due to lack of a market. They are raised all naturally and are allowed access to a free range and free run from spring until winter. The Organic Poultry that I raise includes Broiler Chickens, Large White Turkeys, and a small amount of White Peking Ducks.
I raise my Poultry from day old chicks, they remain in a brood until they fully feather (3-4 weeks), after which they are moved to 3 large outdoor pens. From sun up until sun down they are allowed access to pasture, they are allowed free range and free run. Organic certification does not allow for antibiotics or chemicals to be used at any time during the poultry's growth. I refuse to confine any livestock that I raise and believe that all livestock benefits from fresh air, sunshine, and a good pasture to roam on. They are fed Certified Organic rations and I use Organic homeopathic methods to promote good health. In 2007 I began to raise honey bees, and I have applied Organic methods to my beekeeping. In 2008 I harvested 400 lbs of Natural Wildflower Honey. I also have a 1 acre farm that on which I grow various crops for my family and local farmers markets.
